Germany Calls for Calm in EU-US Trade Tensions Amid Tariff Threats
Germany’s Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil has urged restrained negotiations to de-escalate rapidly deteriorating trade relations between the European Union and the United States. The appeal follows President Donald Trump’s threat to impose 50% tariffs on all EU imports effective June 1.
"We don’t need provocations—we need serious dialogue," Klingbeil stated in a German newspaper interview, revealing prior discussions with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. The minister warned the proposed tariffs WOULD inflict comparable damage on both American and European economies.
Brussels maintains a unified stance, with Klingbeil emphasizing Europe’s readiness to protect its economic interests. The confrontation emerges during delicate global market conditions, where trade barriers could ripple across financial ecosystems including cryptocurrency markets sensitive to macroeconomic policies.
